Background of the Study
Electoral malpractice poses a significant threat to the credibility of election results, often resulting in the distortion of democratic processes. In Nigeria, Jalingo Local Government in Taraba State has been a focal point of electoral malpractice, ranging from vote buying to ballot box snatching and result manipulation (Adeleke & Musa, 2024). These acts undermine public confidence in the election outcomes and diminish the legitimacy of elected officials. Electoral malpractice is often fueled by political competition, weak electoral institutions, and poor enforcement of electoral laws (Aliyu & Abdullahi, 2023). As a result, the integrity of elections is compromised, leading to a loss of faith in the democratic process. This study explores the impact of electoral malpractice on the credibility of election results in Jalingo Local Government, examining the causes, consequences, and potential solutions to reduce electoral fraud.

Electoral malpractice in Jalingo Local Government has raised concerns regarding the credibility and fairness of election results. The use of fraudulent practices, such as vote buying, intimidation, and electoral violence, has led to contested results and weakened public trust in political institutions (Muhammad & Abubakar, 2024). Despite the efforts by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to curb these malpractices, they remain prevalent, undermining the legitimacy of elections. This study aims to examine the extent to which electoral malpractice affects the credibility of election results in Jalingo, providing a critical analysis of the factors contributing to this issue and suggesting strategies to enhance electoral integrity.
